BMW Motorrad has this week revealed its R 12 S, a new variant based on the recently released ‘R 12 nineT’ retro roadster platform, which brings new styling elements that hark back to the brand’s R 90 S from the 1970s.

Distinguishing the R 12 S is an orange-silver-and-black colour scheme, with black forks and handlebars, a cockpit fairing with a dark tinted windscreen, and premium elements like silver wire-spoked wheels. The bike also gains unique ‘S’ badging.

“The defining design elements of our R 12 S include the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with the tinted windshield, the seat with contrast stitching, and the Lavaorange metallic paint finish as a nod to the legendary R 90 S Daytona Orange from 1975,” said BMW Motorrad Design head Alexander Buckan.

“The design is perfectly complemented by details such as the red-laid ‘S’ on the side covers, the red double line, and the brushed and clear-lacquered aluminum surfaces of the tank and seat hump.”

The bike carries on with its 1170cc boxer engine, which generates 80kW and 115Nm like its standard R 12 nineT stablemate.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed, however, BMW Motorrad’s local wing has confirmed that the bike will arrive locally in 2025.

For reference, the standard R 12 nineT is available from $26,465 rideaway, with the new ‘S’ version expected to come at some premium.
