KTM’s flagship adventure tourer, the 1290 Super Adventure S, has benefitted from significant performance and technical advancements for the 2021 model-year.

Notably, the bike debuts radar-based adaptive cruise control, a feature adopted from the car industry that allows the rider to define a distance from the vehicle ahead, and let the bike automatically regulate its speed when the said distance is reduced.

The adaptive cruise control system, which was developed in collaboration with Bosch, can be adjusted in five stages via new handlebar switchgear.

Sitting atop a redesigned storage compartment is now a 7.0-inch TFT dash with a revised user interface, giving access to the Super Adventure’s new-generation electronic aids.

For 2021, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S features WP Apex semi-active suspension, that can adjust in real-time based on rider behaviour, while an optional Suspension Pro package adds individual damping for the fork and the shock, as well as automatic preload adjustment and an on/off anti-dive setting.

KTM will also offer packages to add a more advanced quickshifter, hill hold, an adaptive brake light as well as its Motor Slip Regulation system which adjusts engine braking levels to further reduce rear wheel slip.

Wind tunnel testing has resulted in sharper ergonomics, with a more aerodynamic windshield and bodywork, a new 23-litre keyless fuel tank and adjustable two-tiered seat.

The bike is motivated by a familiar 1301cc V-twin generating 118kW and 138Nm, which now breathes through an upgraded exhaust and is matched with a revised Pankl gearbox.

Furthermore, the engine now benefits from new pistons and a new water/oil cooling system, changes which are said to increase reliability and lower fuel consumption.

The 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is set to hit Australian showrooms in April, with a more off-road focussed Super Adventure R variant likely to follow.

KTM will also release its smaller 890 Adventure range in the coming months, which replaces the 790 Adventure range with a more potent engine, revised ergonomics and styling, improved brakes and enhanced electronics.
