Royal Enfield’s Himalayan 450 has officially landed Down under. It’s miles faster, lighter and significantly more advanced than the bike it replaces. Let’s ride the darn thing like we stole it…

The new Himalayan proved itself worthy on our three-day ride, led by two-time Isle of Man TT winner Cam Donald, who often likes to push the boundaries on test. It’s a good thing, because it showed just how capable this machine can be, if you’re brave enough.

This new model represents much more than just a facelift. Rather an all-new motorcycle debuting a 452cc single-cylinder engine, which is liquid-cooled as a first, and much gruntier than its predecessor pushing out a healthy 29kW and 40Nm. That’s also mated to a six-speed transmission, a considerable upgrade over the five-speeder of its predecessor.

Also new is a ride-by-wire electronics package, meaning we now have rider modes and switchable ABS. We also get a 4.0-inch colour dash, making it the first Royal Enfield to feature a TFT screen.

As well as the new engine and technology boost, is a much improved chassis with Showa suspension offering 200mm of travel at both ends. This proved tremendously capable on our hard off-road test.

As standard the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is finished in a single-tone Kaza Brown paint scheme priced from $8990 rideaway, while more premium dual-tone offerings will be available from $9250 and $9490.

We now know that a ‘Kamet White’ colour scheme will arrive later in the year, which brings key upgrades including tubeless tyres, alongside an optional ‘rally’ solo seat package.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is best positioned to compete with the KTM 390 Adventure and incoming CFMOTO 450MT, some of the more affordable lightweight adventure bike models, all of which meet learner-approval (LAMS) requirements in Australia.
